career

Born in the Epirotic village of Elliniko, Papagiannis made his first sculptures as a child, for example the heads of villagers.

From 1960 to 1967 he studied on a scholarship at the Athens School of Fine Arts under Giannis Pappas (sculpture) and Nikos Kerlis (plaster and copper casting) and received diplomas in art theory and applied arts. This was followed by a two-year study of ancient Greek and Mediterranean art with research trips to Crete , Cyprus , Asia Minor , Egypt and the Levant . In 1970 he began his academic career as assistant to Giannis Pappas.

In 1972 he led a scientific research project by students at the Athens School of Art in Zagorochoria / Epirus, in which traditional wood carvings, stone sculptures and local architectural features were explored.

In 1991 he was appointed full professor of sculpture at the Athens School of Fine Arts .

In 1997 he spent a four-month research stay in the USA .

In 2009 the Museum of Contemporary Art Theodoros Papagiannis , which he created himself, was inaugurated in the former elementary school in Elliniko-Katsanochoria / Ioannina.

Papagiannis comes from Epirus , a barren mountainous country with villages whose gray stone architecture hardly stands out from the harsh background. This origin shaped a style that expresses respect and economy for the diverse materials that he uses for his work. Many of his works are reminiscent of the sculptures of the Cycladic culture in their simplicity . In a comment on the museum catalog, the professor of art history, Marina Lambraki-Plaka, describes his art as contemporary with an antique "touch" . Another aspect of his homeland has flowed into and enriched his style: Epirus, especially the capital Ioannina , is known as a center of traditional handicrafts . This post-modernist return to local traditions can be seen particularly in his more recent works, some of which are richly decorated with silversmith-like decorations .

Of the artist's many exhibitions since 1975, only a few are listed here: 1994 Zurich , 1995 London and Nicosia , 1996 Athens and Geneva ; together with other artists also in Sofia , Budapest and Paris . Papagiannis has led a number of international workshops and symposia over the past decade, e. B. 2007 with the University of the Arts Berlin in Athens and 2008 with the Milan Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera in Delphi .
