Baron Theodorus Frederik van Capellen (born September 6, 1762 in Nijmegen , † April 15, 1824 in Brussels ) was a Dutch naval officer.

Life

He joined the Dutch sea service in 1772 and became a captain in 1783. In 1792 and 1793 he commanded several gunboats and defended the Hollandsche Diep against the French. In 1799 he went with part of his ships to the British ( surrender in the Vlieter ), for which he was sentenced to death in contumaciam .

After the return of the Prince of Orange in 1813 , he too returned to Holland , became Vice Admiral and was commissioned to take over the Dutch colonies in the East Indies from the British. When the Dutch flag was insulted by Algiers , Capellen was appointed admiral of the Dutch fleet in the Mediterranean, undertook a reconnaissance of the Algerian port in June 1816 and joined forces with the British fleet under Lord Exmouth to bomb Algiers in August . He was involved in the fire of Algiers, the burning of the Algerian fleet and the liberation of Christian prisoners. He died as Court Marshal to the Prince and Princess of Orange on April 15, 1824 in Brussels.
