from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Theonestos (* 4th century, uncertain: Greece ; † October 30, 425 in Altinum , Veneto) is a saint of the Roman Catholic Church in the early 4th century. His feast day is October 30th.

Theonestus was bishop of Philippi ( Macedonia ), was expelled from his diocese by the Arians and made a pilgrimage to Rome . He then went to Milan and was martyred in Altinum, northeast of Venice . His cult is cultivated in memory of these events, especially in northern Italian cities. Theonastus is attested as the patron saint of the monastery in Treviso around 710 .

The lost story of Theonastus' suffering was apparently available to a monk from Sankt Alban in Mainz around 800 . In his work, Theonestos identified with Bishop Theonastus of Mainz . According to the Mainz tradition, Theonastus was stoned there. This is where the “Theonestos” legends originate on the Middle Rhine.
