Theophil Pistorius

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Theophil Pistorius , baptismal name: Theophilus Peck (~ September 13, 1592 in St. Joachimsthal ) was a German linguist , theologian , Hebrew and poet . He is not to be confused with his father and nephew of the same name.

Life

Theophil Pistorius was born in St. Joachimsthal in Bohemia in 1592 as the son of the local pastor Theophil Pistorius, called Beck (* 1532 in St. Joachimsthal; † 1610 ibid) and his wife Rachel, née. Mauersperger born and baptized on the 16th Sunday after Trinity in the parish church. His grandfather was Erasmus Beck (* around 1500 in Schneeberg ; † 1545 in St. Joachimsthal), "a good Hebrew who docirte this language here". Elias Pistorius was his brother.

Pistorius, who was extraordinarily gifted in oriental languages, enrolled at the University of Rostock in the winter semester 1622/1623 as "Theophilus Pistorius ex valle Ioachimica Bohemus". He lectured at the universities of Leipzig , Wittenberg , Jena and in 1623 Copenhagen and lived in Hamburg for a long time . He was awarded the poetic laurel wreath by the imperial count palatine . Nothing is known about his further life.

His publications are often wrongly assigned to his nephew of the same name (* 1615 in St. Joachimsthal; † November 7, 1679 in Delitzsch ), who also published theological writings.
