Thermal spring Neumühle (2019)

The Neumühle thermal spring is located in the Kemnitzbach valley in the municipality of Weischlitz in the Vogtland district . It was created in 1961 as an unintended consequence of a geological exploratory drilling (No. 280/60) by the SDAG Wismut . The artesian water of this thermal spring emerges with a year-round continuous spring discharge from the above-cased borehole in the form of a fountain to the surface of the valley floor.

The source is located behind the former Neumühle restaurant, not far from the Elstertal bridge on the federal motorway 72 . However, it can only be reached via a pedestrian path outside the mill property.

The water temperature is a constant 25 degrees Celsius and comes from a depth of 771 meters of this borehole, the final depth of which is 1173.6 meters. During the drilling work, a water-bearing crevice was pierced. The spring was placed under nature protection on November 22, 1962 . In 1967 a small structural version with Theumaer plates was created so that it is accessible to visitors. On the cover of the enclosure wall there is a bronze plaque with explanations. In the meantime, a comprehensive information board has also been set up.

The clear and odorless water has a slightly bitter taste. With its significant levels of sodium , calcium and chlorine ions, it is also a mineral source .

Essential chemical components of the spring water
Ions /
Years of Analysis
sodium Calcium iron chloride
1961 389 mg / l 475 mg / l 0.00 mg / l 1425 mg / l
1990 678 mg / l 990 mg / l 0.60 mg / l 2747 mg / l
2003 680 mg / l 980 mg / l 0.95 mg / l 2600 mg / l

The original intention was to use this mineral water leak as a healing spring in order to use it for therapy against lung diseases. However, the salt content, which had risen over the first few years, would have caused disadvantageous salinisation in the near and further drainage area had it been fully used . Therefore this project was abandoned and her discharge was reduced again. The natural flow rate would be unaffected at 7.5 liters per second.
