Thilo Bechstädt (* 1944 ) is a German geologist .

Life

Thilo Bechstädt studied geology and mineralogy at the University of Innsbruck and was there in 1972 with a thesis on the facies of sediments of the Middle Triassic in the northern Dolomites doctorate . While still a student, he worked for Irish Base Metals as an exploration geologist in the Alps. After that, he was a research assistant in Innsbruck, Freiburg and Munich (1974), where he 1978 on geology and tectonics of Drauzugs in Carinthia habilitation , which he won the Hermann Credner price received (including diagenesis and formation of the lead-zinc ore deposits) . From 1978 to 1981 he worked as a petroleum geologist for Deminex (Deutsche Mineralöl-Explorationsgesellschaft mbH) in Vietnam and Libya. In 1982 he became professor for facies and historical geology at the University of Freiburg and in 1991 professor for sedimentary geology and one of two directors of the Geological-Paleontological Institute of Heidelberg University . In 2009 he retired in Heidelberg. Since 2010 he has been Professor of Petroleum Geology at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow .

He is particularly concerned with sedimentary rocks (carbonates) of the Cambrian and Triassic, from the Mediterranean, the Alps and Namibia, their facies analysis and diagenesis. He investigated the influence of sea level fluctuations and the climate in Proterozoic to Mesozoic sequences ( e.g. Snowball Earth , investigated in the Proterozoic Namibia) on the sediments, with the analysis and simulation of basin deposits, he investigated dolomitization and the formation of lead-zinc ores in sediments .

From 2000 to 2004 he was the main reviewer for geology and paleontology at the German Research Foundation. In Heidelberg he was one of the co-founders of GeoResources, which is intended to impart geological knowledge for industry (oil, natural gas, geothermal energy). From 2004 to 2008 he was Head of Central Europe for the Society for Sedimentary Geology .

In 1978 he received the Hermann Credner Prize and in 2012 the Hans Stille Medal .
