Thoma Thomai

Thoma Thomai Dhamo (* 1936 in Barmash, Kolonja , Albania ) is an Albanian university professor and sculptor . He is one of the most famous sculptors in Albania and created numerous statues of the Catholic Saint Mother Teresa .

Life

Thoma Thomai studied applied sculpture under Otto Eckert at the Academy of Fine Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague until 1961 . After his return he worked in a porcelain factory before founding the Atelier for Applied Arts at the Academy of Arts in Tirana in 1969 . He later worked as the faculty dean for the university. In 1995 Thomai completed his habilitation.

Thoma Thomai has participated in numerous international exhibitions, including the Mediterranean Biennale in Alexandria , an exhibition for contemporary art from Albania in France, an exhibition for Albanian art in Rome , the Eurasian Biennale in Ankara , the Cairo International Biennale.

Thomai created some sculptures that are still formative or at least very visible today. These include the Skanderbeg monument on the square of the same name in Skopje (North Macedonia), the Monument to the Martyrs in Kičevo (North Macedonia) and statues of Mother Teresa at the Tirana airport and the Cathedral of Rio de Janeiro .
