Thomas Aigner (historian)

Thomas Aigner (born June 12, 1973 in Mödling near Vienna) is an Austrian historian . He is director of the diocesan archive St. Pölten and president of the International Center for Archival Research ICARUS .

Life

Aigner attended elementary school in Altenmarkt an der Triesting , from 1983 to 1991 the grammar school in Berndorf and then studied history at the University of Vienna . In 1994 he graduated with a master's degree in philosophy and in 1997 he received his doctorate with the historical dissertation on the Mariazell monastery community . In addition, from 1992 he attended the training course at the Institute for Austrian Historical Research for archival and historical auxiliary sciences, which he completed in 1995 with the state examination.

Since 1995 he has been director of the diocesan archive St. Pölten and since June 2008 president of the International Center for Archival Research, a collaboration of more than 180 archives, universities and scientific institutions from Europe, the USA, Canada and Iraq to digitize their holdings. Several initiatives and projects in the field of digitization of historical sources go back to Aigner: 2002 Monasterium.Net (virtual archive of European documents), 2009 Matricula-Online (church books online) and 2011 the Austrian archive portal Archiv.net.

He played a leading role in numerous international projects, including a. Archives Portal Europe Network of excellence, European Network on archival cooperation (ENArC), Crossborderarchives (CRARC), CO: OP - The creative archives 'and users' network and in the executive team of the Time Machine project, an initiative for the comprehensive digitization of European cultural assets .

Aigner initiated the Icarus Alliance , which at the end of 2018 comprised around 180 institutions from almost 40 countries. On the occasion of its 10th anniversary in 2018, he stated:

Aigner is a member of various international (ICA, ICARUS, Time Machine Organization) and national specialist bodies in Belgium, Germany, the Czech Republic, Croatia, Switzerland, Finland and Spain.
