Thomas Alkemeyer

Thomas Alkemeyer (born December 29, 1955 in Hamburg ) is a German sociologist . He is professor for sociology and sports sociology at the Carl von Ossietzky University in Oldenburg .

Life

Alkemeyer studied German , sports science , philosophy and education in Berlin. He received his doctorate from the Free University of Berlin . In 1995 he received the Ernst Reuter Prize for his dissertation From the Competition of Nations to the Struggle of Nations - Appropriation and Reinterpretation of the “Olympic Idea” in German Fascism . From 1987 he was a lecturer for sociology and philosophy of sport as well as a research assistant at the Institute for Sport Science at the Free University of Berlin. From 1999, Alkemeyer was, among other things, a senior staff member in the DFG special research area “Cultures of the Performative”. In 2001 he became professor for sport and society at the Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg . Since 2010 he has been the spokesperson for the graduate school “Self-Formations - Practices of Subjectivation from a Historical and Interdisciplinary Perspective”. He has also been Professor of Sociology and Sports Sociology since 2012. He is a member of the jury for the annual Hannah Arendt Prize .

Alkemeyer's research aims at a sociological understanding of sport and exercise. With the help of practical theories (with reference to Pierre Bourdieu and Anthony Giddens ) and the concept of subjectification (following Louis Althusser , Michel Foucault and Judith Butler ), both the conditions of origin and the effects of physical practices in different social contexts are examined.
