Thomas Beyer (born September 6, 1963 in Fürth ) is a German lawyer and politician . He is chairman of the Arbeiterwohlfahrt (AWO) Bavaria and was a member of the Bavarian state parliament for the SPD from 2003 to 2013 .

School education and job

After high school graduation from Adam-Kraft-Gymnasium in Schwabach and basic military service in Amberg and Regensburg, Thomas Beyer studied law at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg from 1983 to 1989 . He passed the first state examination in law in January 1989. He then completed his legal preparatory service as a trainee lawyer at the Nuremberg Higher Regional Court . The Second State Examination followed in November 1994. In 1998 he was admitted to the bar.

Political career

Beyer has been a member of the SPD since 1995. In March 2002, he ran in Nuremberg County as a district , but was defeated incumbent Helmut Reich. He was elected to the district council and chairman of the SPD parliamentary group. In the local elections in 2008 he was confirmed as a district councilor.

In September 2003 Thomas Beyer was elected to the Bavarian State Parliament via the constituency list of Middle Franconia and was a member of the Committee for Economy, Infrastructure, Transport and Technology there until 2008. In the 2008 elections, he was re-elected to the state parliament with the second-best result in Bavaria. From 2006 to June 2011 he was deputy chairman of the SPD parliamentary group. Since then he has been their economic policy spokesman.

In 2007 Thomas Beyer was elected deputy chairman of the Bavarian SPD. In 2009 and 2011 he was confirmed in office, in July 2011 with more than 95.7% of the votes. In 2013 he decided not to run again.

Beyer has been the state chairman of the workers' welfare organization in Bavaria since September 2004 .

On June 19, 2013, Beyer announced that he was withdrawing from his candidacy for the Bavarian state parliament; he was set up as a direct applicant in the district of Nürnberger Land and as a list leader in the constituency of Middle Franconia . He justified his retirement with a short-term appointment to a professorship at the Georg-Simon-Ohm University in Nuremberg .

He is the first deputy chairman of the board of trustees of the Academy for Political Education in Tutzing.
