Sir Thomas Carew, 1st Baronet (baptized June 21, 1632 - after September 13, 1673 ) was an English nobleman and politician who was once elected as a member of the House of Commons .

Origin and education

Thomas Carew came from the Carew von Haccombe family, a family of the Gentry of Devon . He was the eldest son of Thomas Carew († 1656) and his wife Anne Clifford. In 1649 he first learned law at the Middle Temple in London before studying at Exeter College in Oxford from November 1650 . In 1653 he graduated as a Bachelor , and in June 1655 he graduated as a Master of Arts .

After the death of his father, who had not held any public office, Carew inherited his estates in 1656, including Haccombe House at Newton Abbot . During the Stuart Restoration , he became Justice of the Peace of Devon in March 1660 . In addition, he was jointly responsible for the establishment of the militia in Devon, he himself was appointed captain of the militia in April. In the general election in 1661 he was elected MP for Tiverton Borough through the influence of his father-in-law Sir Henry Carew . On August 2, 1661, he was given the hereditary title of Baronet , of Haccombe in the County of Devon. As an active member of the so-called Cavalier Parliament , he was a member of 23 committees, in addition he was jury at the Assize Court of Exeter in 1664 . It was obviously thanks to his influential cousin, Sir Thomas Clifford , that he became a gentleman of the privy chamber in 1668 and received a handsome annual pension of £ 400. From 1670 he served as Deputy Lieutenant of Devon. Nevertheless, in 1669 he was not considered a supporter of the government in the House of Commons. During the third Anglo-Dutch naval war , he was given a lucrative position in the prize office in Plymouth in 1672 . Still, on his death in September 1673, he left only £ 480 in cash but substantial debts of over £ 1000.

Family and offspring

As early as 1650, Carew had married Elisabeth, a daughter of Sir Henry Carew von Bickleigh Castle and his wife Dorothy Mohun. His wife became a co-heir of her father, with her he had three sons and three daughters. After the death of his first wife, he married Martha Duck, the widow of Nicholas Duck of Mount Radford and daughter and co-heir of Arthur Duck of South Cadbury , Somerset, on June 20, 1672, as a second marriage . He had a daughter with her. His heir was his son Henry Carew, 2nd Baronet (around 1654–1695) from his first marriage.
