Thomas Diez

Thomas Diez (born February 2, 1970 in Mannheim ) is Professor of Political Science and International Relations at the Institute for Political Science at the University of Tübingen .

academic career

Diez studied political science , public law, and economic and social history at the University of Mannheim and Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore . After completing his studies, he worked as a research assistant at the Mannheim Center for European Social Research from 1995 to 1997. He wrote his dissertation on British European policy. In this context he went to the University of Sussex for half a year as a Chevening Fellow in 1997 . From 1997 to 2000 he conducted research with Barry Buzan and Ole Wæver on the European Security Project of the Copenhagen Peace Research Institute. In 2000 he took up a position as a lecturer at the University of Birmingham and was finally appointed Professor of International Relations in 2005. From 2005 to 2008 he headed the Department for Political Science and International Studies in Birmingham. In the academic year 2008/2009 he spent a sabbatical at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich before he was offered a position in Tübingen. From 2000 to 2004 Diez was also a member of the Executive Committee of the British International Studies Association and since 2004 he has been a member of the Steering Committee of the Standing Group on International Relations (SGIR) of the European Consortium for Political Research (ECPR).

Research priorities

One focus of Diez's research is the European Union as an actor in international relations, its influence on neighboring European states (including Turkey ), its potential for transforming conflicts, and cooperation with other regional organizations. Another important focus is the Cyprus conflict , on which Diez has published extensively. Within international relations , Diez deals with social constructivism and post-structuralism . He has published articles in international journals such as "Cooperation and Conflict", "Journal of European Integration" and "International Relations and Development".

Awards

In September 2009, Diez was awarded the Anna Lindh Prize, which is awarded annually by three major European foundations, for special services to the analysis of European foreign policy.
