Thomas Franzius
Thomas Franzius, (also: Ferenz ; Franz ; * December 17, 1563 in Magdeburg ; † June 10, 1614 ibid) was a German jurist and East Frisian Chancellor .
Life
Born as the son of Thomas Franzius from Pressburg and his wife Anna, the daughter of Veit Winsheim , who had been married since 1590 , he attended Helmstedt University at the age of 18 . In 1582 he switched to the University of Wittenberg , where he devoted himself to law after completing his studies at the philosophical faculty. After he had obtained his licentiate in 1587 , he received his doctorate in law in 1589 . 1591 he is at the law school professor , in what capacity he 1597 the Rector took over the academy. With the professorship he became assessor at the Wittenberg consistory , at the court court and at the jury's chair.
His interests lay particularly in the area of feudal law. Therefore he was employed by Count Edzard II of East Frisia as a legal advisor. For him he was sent to Prague in 1598 with an East Frisian embassy . For his successor Enno III. he took over the office of chancellor from 1599 to 1611 and determined the administration, politics and justice of the county. Since he was loyal to his master, he was hated by the East Frisian estates.
In 1600 he took part in the Berum settlement and worked for his sovereign in Prague for a long time, where he wrote his memoranda against the fight against the estates. Nevertheless, his action against the estates headed by Johannes Althusius was not crowned with any far-reaching success. In 1609 his memoranda against the fight against the estates came into the hands of his opponents. Ubbo Emmius published this with a colored comment in 1610, so that he had to leave the country in 1611. He returned to Magdeburg, where he worked as city counsel for a few years and died.
