Thomas Hartley Crawford

Thomas Hartley Crawford (born November 14, 1786 in Chambersburg , Franklin County , Pennsylvania , †  January 27, 1863 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician . Between 1829 and 1833 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Thomas Crawford attended Princeton College until 1804 . After completing a law degree and being admitted to the bar in 1807, he began to work in this profession in Chambersburg. In the 1820s he joined the movement around the future US President Andrew Jackson and became a member of the Democratic Party founded by this in 1828 .

In the congressional election of 1828 Crawford was elected in the eleventh constituency of Pennsylvania to the US House of Representatives in Washington, where he succeeded James Wilson on March 4, 1829 . After re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1833 . Since President Jackson took office in 1829, there has been heated debate inside and outside of Congress about its policies. It was about the controversial enforcement of the Indian Removal Act , the conflict with the state of South Carolina , which culminated in the nullification crisis , and the banking policy of the president.

Crawford was a member of the House of Representatives from Pennsylvania in 1833 and 1834 . In 1836 he was charged with investigating cases of fraud in connection with the acquisition of an Indian reservation. He was then appointed by the new President Martin Van Buren as the Federal Government's Commissioner of Indian Affairs . He held this office between 1838 and 1845. He was then appointed criminal judge in the District of Columbia by President James K. Polk . He carried out this activity between 1845 and the restructuring of this court in 1861. Thomas Crawford died on January 27, 1863 in the federal capital Washington and was buried in the convention cemetery there.
