Thomas Hauser (born October 27, 1953 in Zell am Ziller ) is a former Austrian ski racer . The giant slalom and slalom specialist was four times Austrian national champion . In the Ski World Cup he reached a podium and was in the top ten a total of 18 times. His younger sisters Brigitte and Gabi were also ski racers.

Career

Thomas Hauser started skiing at an early age. He attended the ski school in Stams and completed an apprenticeship as a carpenter . At the age of 16 he became Austrian champion in giant slalom. In 1971 he was accepted into the national team of the Austrian Ski Association . Initially, the Tyrolean started mainly in the European Cup , in which he took second place in the slalom in Megève in 1972 and third in the giant slalom in Innsbruck and in the slalom and giant slalom in Zwiesel . In 1972 he became Austrian champion in slalom.

Hauser scored his first points in the World Cup on January 15, 1973 when he finished sixth in the giant slalom at Chuenisbärgli in Adelboden . Two months later, he finished fifth in the Anchorage Giant Slalom . On December 16, 1973 he reached a World Cup podium for the first and only time. In the giant slalom in Saalbach-Hinterglemm , he finished second behind the surprise winner Hubert Berchtold . In January 1974, he was among the top ten in the Wengen and Kitzbühel slaloms and thus made it into the team for the World Championships in St. Moritz. There, however, Franz Klammer, who was weaker in the slalom, was given his starting place to enable him to participate in the combination.

In the 1974/75 season, Hauser was six times in the fastest six. The best result was fourth place in the giant slalom in Adelboden. He finished seventh in the Giant Slalom World Cup. In the European Cup he won the giant slalom in Tignes and in 1975 he was Austrian champion in this discipline for the third time. In the following World Cup season, too, the Tyrolean made it into the top six five times. In the giant slalom he qualified for the 1976 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck , but was eliminated there in the first round.

In the winter of 1976/77 Hauser did not achieve any World Cup points. He then ended his career because he had to take over his parents' carpentry business because of his father's health problems.
