Thomas Lukan (born Thomas Herwig Schuler on January 18, 1961 in Vienna ) is an Austrian composer .

biography

Lukan's first exploration of music began in his youth. He began taking piano and recorder lessons at the age of six, and was also a member of a boys' choir. The first attempts at composition were made. In 1980 he graduated from a technical college specializing in communications engineering. Initially with the intention of studying electrical engineering, he attended the Technical University of Vienna from 1980 to 1982 .

From 1982 to 1991 he studied composition at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna with Erich Urbanner , Augustin Kubizek , and from 1983 to 1985 took private composition lessons with Robert Schollum . He also took up composing studies with Augustin Kubizek from 1982 to 1985. Despite studying composition, he successfully passed the master's examination for radio and television technology in 1984. He also attended a sound engineer training from 1985 to 1987.

After completing his composition studies, he was given a teaching position at the Institute for Music Theory and Basic Harmonics Research at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, which he held until 2002. From 2003 he was assistant to Prof. Erich Urbanner and held a teaching position at the Institute for Composition and Electroacoustics until his retirement.

In the period from 2002 to 2005 he completed a doctoral degree on his own music theory at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna and at the University of Vienna, which he obtained with his dissertation "Fractal Tonality", a scientific presentation of his own music theory based on overtones, completed.

He has been a freelance composer since 1986 and is particularly concerned with microtonality and overtones . He consistently uses tonal means, which are expanded and redefined by introducing ekmelic sounds. He tries to compose free of aesthetic categories and without fear of contact. In this way, he particularly draws on unit-bound micro- and polytonality and the resulting new possibilities for compositional technique and voice guidance, which he represents in his music theory "fractal tonality".

He is married to the singer and instrumental and vocal teacher Danja Lukan. The two have a daughter together.
