Thomas Mellios

Thomas Mellios (born June 8, 1940 in Thessaloniki , Greece ) is a Greek musician ( tenor ), conductor and composer. He advocated international understanding and local voting rights for migrants in Germany and Europe at an early stage .

Artistic work

Thomas Mellios completed a music and singing degree as a tenor at the State Conservatory in Thessaloniki . As a mechanical engineer he came to Stuttgart in 1965 , where he continued his vocal training with Siegfried Fischer-Sand and Hildemarie Keim. There followed numerous solo appearances in opera and oratorios concerts, which he realized part-time and for which he received public attention.

From 1983 onwards, Thomas Mellios turned to the music of his homeland. With the performance of the folk oratorio " Axion Esti " - "Praise be" - by Mikis Theodorakis in the Württemberg State Theater in Stuttgart , he had his first great success in June 1983. From 1983 to 1984 he also appeared in the Broadway musical Cabaret by John van Druten as a tenor soloist at the Württemberg State Theater. In 1986 he founded the “ Ensemble Archipelagos ” - and in the same year appeared for the first time as a conductor with considerable success. This was followed by a series of concerts on German stages and abroad.

In 1989 Thomas Mellios began composing with songs a. a. based on texts by Garefis Delingas, Tassos Kodakos, Jannis Ritsos , Nikiforos Vrettakos and Giorgos Seferis . He was increasingly concerned with song cycles - an approach that resulted in his first work “Legende und Traum” based on texts by Garefis Delingas in a version for a small ensemble. The elements folk song, folk instruments, symphonic instruments and poetic texts were used. The musical work of Thomas Mellios now comprises more than 100 songs, cantatas and song cycles.

In 1982 Mellios was a founding member of the “Alte Oper” Stuttgart association. There he took part in numerous benefit concerts and fundraising campaigns for the renovation of the opera house.
