Thomas Menamparampil

Thomas Menamparampil SDB (born October 22, 1936 in Palai , India ) is an Indian religious and emeritus Roman Catholic Archbishop of Guwahati .

Life

Menamparampil joined the religious order of the Salesians of Don Bosco and made his profession on May 24, 1955 . After studying philosophy and Catholic theology , he received the sacrament of ordination through Bishop Stephen Ferrando SDB on May 2, 1965 . From 1969 to 1970 he completed a master's degree in history and English. From 1972 to 1974 he was deputy provincial in Guwahati; he was also committed to the various cultures in north-eastern India. From 1975 to 1981 he was the principal of the Don Bosco Technical School in Shillong.

On June 19, 1981 appointed him Pope John Paul II. To the Bishop of Dibrugarh . The episcopal ordination received his Archbishop Hubert D'Rosario on 29 November of the same year. On March 30, 1992 he was appointed bishop of the newly established Guwahati diocese in India and after its elevation to archbishopric on July 10, 1995, he was appointed archbishop and metropolitan of the eponymous church province .

From 1986 to 1992 Menamparampil had been the head of the Evangelization Department of the Federation of Asian Bishops' Conferences . During this time he had worked primarily to deepen the relationship between evangelization and Asian cultures and, among other things, organized a meeting between representatives of the Church and representatives of the communist governments.

Menamparampil was later, among other things, special secretary for the Asian Synod (1998) and is the author of over 180 articles on various topics: evangelization, culture, pastoral care, religious education and prayer. He was the head of the Evangelization Department of the Federation of Asian Bishops' Conferences and Chairman of the Council of Northeast Indian Bishops.

Menamparampil also acted as a mediator in the conflict between the various ethnic groups in the Union state of Assam and coordinates the "Joint Ecumenical Peace Team", which advocates dialogue in Northeast India and has already proven to be an effective organism when it comes to resolving local conflicts .

In 2009 he was responsible for the design of the texts for the Pope's Way of the Cross in the Colosseum .

Archbishop Manamparampil was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2011. The background to this was his decades-long commitment to peace, reconciliation and stability in Northeast India - a region full of territorial and ethnic conflicts.

On January 18, 2012, Pope Benedict XVI. his resignation request submitted for reasons of age.

From February 3, 2014 to October 15, 2016, he was Apostolic Administrator of the Jowai Diocese during the Sedis vacancy .

Thomas Menamparampil is a member of the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life . Its membership was confirmed on March 29, 2014.

In October 2019 Menamparampil was a guest of the catholic aid organization missio on the occasion of the month of world mission.
