Anna Rüger

Anna Rüger (* in Augsburg; † after 1491 , also known as Anna Rügerin ) was an early printer in Augsburg. She is the first woman to appear in the colophon of a print.

Anna Rüger was the daughter of Barbara Schönsperger, the 1467/68 the printer in a second marriage Johann Bämler married († 1503), the 136 in Augsburg incunabula anfertigte. In 1481 Anna's husband, the goldsmith Thomas Rüger, set up another printing workshop with his brother-in-law Johann Schönsperger . Together they printed two works in 1481 and 1482 (see below). Thomas Rüger died in 1483. Anna married the second marriage in 1491 to the bookseller Peter Berger, who had also made ten prints from 1486–1490. Her nephew is the printer and publisher Johann Schönsperger the Younger , her niece married the Augsburg bookseller and publisher Johannes Oswalt, who had business connections in Basel and Venice.

Anna Rüger printed in the inherited Offizin 1484 two works. The first was Eike von Repgows Sachsenspiegel . Just five weeks later, Formulare und deutsch Rhetorica , a manual containing instructions for processing official documents and letters, appeared. Rüger used a font that her brother used until 1492. The business relationship with her brother was broken (after) 1484.
