Thomas Ranft (graphic designer)

Thomas Ranft (* 1945 in Königsee , Thuringia ) is a German graphic artist and printer .

Life

After working as a tree nursery gardener in Weimar and Markkleeberg and attending the Leipzig Evening Academy in 1966, he studied from 1967 to 1972 at the Leipzig School of Graphics and Book Art . In 1972 he moved to Karl-Marx-Stadt (today Chemnitz).

In 1975 he took part in the pleinairs in Ahrenshoop and on Hiddensee . The result was an 8 mm cine film , which he shot with Michael Morgner and the photographer Ralf-Rainer Wasse.

On his initiative and ideas, he founded the artist group and producer gallery Clara Mosch (1977–1982) in Adelsberg , a district of Karl-Marx-Stadt / Chemnitz , in 1977 together with Carlfriedrich Claus , Michael Morgner , Dagmar Ranft-Schinke and Gregor-Thorsten Schade .

As part of his artistic activity, Ranft occasionally took print jobs. Among others for Horst SAGES , Harald Naegeli, Gerhard Altenbourg and his fellow artist Clara Mosch .

In 1985 he first met Ernst Jandl . He later illustrated Jandl's work, the inscribed armchair .

From 1986 to 1989 he taught at the technical college for applied arts in Schneeberg . Since 1993 he has been a member of the Free Academy of the Arts in Leipzig .

In 2003 he was awarded the Hans Theo Richter Prize of the Saxon Academy of the Arts .

Thomas Ranft lives and works near Chemnitz and is a founding member of the “Art for Chemnitz” association.
