Thomas Rusch (born October 10, 1962 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) is a German photographer who lives in Berlin, Hamburg and Paris.

life and work

After school, Thomas Rusch went to Hamburg in 1981 , where he trained as a photographer. His first publication was in 1986 a series of portraits for the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival in the weekly Stern . This was followed by a long-term collaboration in which Thomas Rusch photographed reports, covers and portraits for Stern. From the end of the eighties, his portraits of famous personalities from culture and politics were published in various magazines. a. in Zeitmagazin , Der Spiegel , Max , GQ . At the same time, numerous award-winning exhibition projects such as “Paradise Lost”, “Cirque O”, “Die Ecke” and more were created.

From the late nineties, Thomas Rusch lived in Paris as a portrait, beauty and advertising photographer. He published series in indie magazines such as Soon, Tank or Oyster as well as in numerous international fashion and lifestyle magazines, photographed advertising campaigns (including for Ray Ban, Beck's, Seat, ZDF) and developed his artistic work further in parallel.

Thomas Rusch has been commuting between Hamburg, Paris and Berlin since 2006. He still works as a portrait and advertising photographer, but increasingly on freelance projects that mostly deal with sexuality, images of women and fetishism . Thomas Rusch examines their ambivalent qualities - between private and public, art and commerce - in his photographs and thus moves in the field of tension between emphasized naturalness and idealized surface. His last exhibitions dealt with the subject of masks (“Behind”, portraits of faces, some of which were made up beyond recognition) and skin (“A Fleur de peau”, various series on the subject of skin).
