Thomas Schnelle (cyclist)

Thomas Schnelle (born March 26, 1960 in Luckenwalde ) is a former German cyclist and national champion in cycling .

Athletic career

Schnell started cycling at TSV Luckenwalde when he was ten. He won a title at the race of the Children's and Youth 1975. 1977 he became East German champion in the individual time trial  Junior Class A. Shortly thereafter, he was winner of the UCI World Cup of juniors in the team pursuit with Hans-Joachim Pohl , Mario Kummer and Ronny Gerlach . A year later, the team won bronze. In the single pursuit , he was able to win the silver medal behind Hans-Joachim Pohl and the bronze medal in 1978 at the Junior World Championships. Schnell, who had been a member of ASK Vorwärts Frankfurt an der Oder since 1974 , was East German champion in 1982 with his club mate Hans-Joachim Pohl in two-man team driving . In the points race , he took third place in the championship race. In 1980 and 1982 he was third in the championship in the team pursuit, in 1981 and 1985 his team came in second. In the championship in points race he was third behind the winner Detlef Macha in 1982 . From 1977 to 1984 he was part of the selection team of the GDR Cycling Association .

Professional

In 1987 he finished his sports studies and became a trainer at ASK Vorwärts Frankfurt an der Oder. From 1991 to 1996 he was employed as a trainer at the Association of German Cyclists (BDR).
