Thomas Sheldon Maxey

Thomas Sheldon Maxey (born September 1, 1846 in Brandon , Rankin County , Mississippi , †  December 5, 1921 in Austin , Texas ) was an American lawyer and politician . After his appointment by President Grover Cleveland , he served as a federal judge in the federal district court for the western district of Texas from 1888 until his resignation in 1916 .

Life

Thomas Maxey fought in the Confederation Army from 1864 during the Civil War . He then completed a legal education and earned a Bachelor of Laws from the Law School of the University of Virginia in 1869 . In 1870 he was a Democratic MP in the Mississippi House of Representatives ; then he moved to Texas and practiced as a lawyer in Jefferson until 1877 . From 1875 he also acted as a city trial lawyer there. From 1877 to 1888 he worked as a lawyer in the state capital Austin.

On June 18, 1888, Maxey was appointed by President Cleveland to succeed Ezekiel B. Turner as a judge on the United States District Court for the Western District of Texas . After confirmation by the US Senate , which took place seven days later, he was able to take up his office, which he held until his resignation on December 12, 1916. Its seat then fell to DuVal West . He died on December 5, 1921 in Austin and was buried in the Oakwood Cemetery there.
