Thomas Walter (botanist)

Thomas Walter (born 1740 in Hampshire , England , † January 18, 1789 in St. John's Parish , Berkeley County , South Carolina ) was a North American botanist . Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Walter ".

Walter was born in Hampshire, England, but emigrated to South Carolina at a young age, where he stayed for the rest of his life. His work Flora caroliniana was probably the first serious flora description written in North America.

He was friends with the botanist John Fraser (botanist) .

A species named after Thomas Walter is the orchid species Cypripedium reginae (1788). More than 1000 initial botanical descriptions are credited to him.
