Thomas William Murphy

Thomas William Murphy CSsR (born December 17, 1917 in Omaha , Nebraska , United States , † July 6, 1995 ) was an American religious and Roman Catholic bishop of Juazeiro in Brazil .

Life

Thomas William Murphy joined the Congregation of the Redemptorists in and put on 2 August 1938, the profession from. He was ordained a priest on December 27, 1950 .

Pope John XXIII appointed him on October 16, 1962 as the first bishop of the newly established diocese of Juazeiro . The Archbishop of Omaha , Gerald Thomas Bergan , ordained him episcopal on January 2 of the following year ; Co-consecrators were William McCarty Tibertus CSsR, bishop of Rapid City , and Glennon Patrick Flavin , auxiliary bishop in Saint Louis .

He attended the second and fourth sessions of the Second Vatican Council as a council father.

On December 29, 1973, Pope Paul VI. his resignation from the diocese of Juazeiro and appointed him titular bishop of Sululos and auxiliary bishop in São Salvador da Bahia .
