Thomas Winkelmann (born December 20, 1959 in Hagen ) is a German - American manager and has been CEO of Air Berlin since February 2017 .

Life

Winkelmann studied linguistics and ancient history at the Free University of Berlin and the Westphalian Wilhelms University of Münster . He then completed a postgraduate course in business administration at the Free University of Berlin. In 2004 he graduated from Harvard University from the AMP . After gaining professional experience in management positions at Kaufhof and the German Travel Agency, he joined Lufthansa in 1998 . There he was initially head of business in Latin America and the Caribbean , based in Miami . Subsequently, as Vice President North and South America in New York, he was responsible for the overall organization of Lufthansa on the American double continent. From September 2006 to the end of October 2015, he was CEO of Germanwings GmbH . There he was also responsible for the sales, marketing, network planning and corporate communications departments. There he should " keep the competition Ryanair , Easyjet and the German number two, Air Berlin , in check ..." Since 2013 he has also been a member of the Board of Directors of JetBlue Airways .

Simultaneously with the handover of responsibility for the low-cost business in the Lufthansa Group from Germanwings to Eurowings , Winkelmann moved to the position of Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Hub Munich of Lufthansa on November 1, 2015 and thus managed the southern Lufthansa hub .

In February 2017 he succeeded Stefan Pichler as CEO of Air Berlin . After Air Berlin filed for insolvency proceedings in August 2017, it was assumed that Winkelmann's salary (a total of 4.5 million euros, approx. 950,000 euros per year) would continue to be paid until 2021, while many employees were left with nothing. Some staff therefore turned to him in a song. In April 2018 it was announced that, contrary to original expectations, he would remain CEO of Air Berlin, which has been in insolvency proceedings since November 2017, in order to assist in particular in the identification and collection of the company's outstanding debts .
