Thomas Young Duncan

Thomas Young Duncan (* 1836 in Plumbridge , County Tyrone , Ireland ; † 18th August 1914 in New Zealand ) was a New Zealand politician of the Liberal Party .

biography

Duncan was born in County Tyrone, Northern Ireland in 1836 . He attended Castledamph National School. In 1858 he emigrated to Victoria , where he worked in gold fields. In 1862 he followed the gold rush to Central Otago in New Zealand. After little success he became a farmer in Pukeuri , north of Oamaru , and lived there until his death.

In the House of Representatives he represented the constituency of Waitaki as a non-party from 1881 to 1890 and then the constituency of Oamaru as a liberal from 1890 to 1911 , when he was defeated by Ernest Lee . From July 2, 1900 to August 6, 1906, he was Minister of Agriculture under Prime Minister Richard Seddon . On June 13, 1912, he was appointed to the Legislative Council , where he sat until his death in 1914.
