Thomas Zenker  (born May 14, 1975  in  Zittau ) is a German local politician of the voter association "Zittau can do more eV" and mayor of the large district town of Zittau.

Life

Thomas Zenker was born in Zittau in 1975 and attended the extended secondary school "Ernst Schneller", which was later renamed the Christian-Weise-Gymnasium . At the time of reunification he founded the first free school newspaper called "Quick Change Artist". In 1993 he passed his Abitur there, began community service in the young community of the Evangelical Church and during this time worked on a voluntary basis in various youth clubs. The youth work was followed by studying history , communication and German studies in Leipzig with two semesters abroad at the Université Sorbonne Nouvelle in Paris . After returning to Leipzig, Zenker decided to move to the Free University of Berlin. There his studies focused on "New German Literature" and journalism . In 2001 he took a part-time job as a language trainer, which he did full-time a short time later and taught German to employees of foreign corporations. Five years later, the master founded his own company, with which he independently offered various communication training courses.

After returning home in 2009, he studied project management and engineering again for two semesters at the International University Institute . He worked for PR & Marketing at the Zittau / Görlitz University of Applied Sciences and, from August 2010, as a freelance journalist for the Sächsische Zeitung Lokalteil Zittau. Two years later he switched back to youth work and from 2012 was project manager for political-historical education at the Hillersche Villa in Zittau.

Zenker has been married since 2005 and has one daughter. He lives with his family in the Eichgraben district of Zittau .

politics

Thomas Zenker has been a city councilor in Zittau and a district councilor in the Görlitz district since 2014. Until his election as Lord Mayor, he was chairman of the board of the electoral association “Zittau can do more”.

In the mayoral election in 2015, Zenker stood as a candidate for the electoral association against seven other candidates for the office. In the first ballot he received 26.5% of the 8,867 votes cast. In the second ballot on June 28, 2015, Zenker was elected with 47.8% ahead of the individual applicants Thomas Krusekopf and Gunter Korschelt. His predecessor Arnd Voigt did not stand for re-election because of his Parkinson's disease . Zenker's seven-year term began on August 1, 2015.
