The Thor Liberty is a general cargo ship launched in Denmark under the flag of the Philippines and measured at 3,810 GT. The current (Sept. 2019) name is Moreta Cargo-5 .

history

The ship was built in 1994 at the North Sea Shipyard in Ringköbing , Denmark and then sailed worldwide under different names - currently for Moreta Shipping Lines - Manila, Philippines . It became known under the previous name Thor Liberty due to some problems and misunderstandings.

In December 2011 the Thor Liberty got into distress in the Baltic Sea in the Finnish archipelago during a violent storm with extremely high waves . The ship asked for pilot assistance and the pilot who had come on board was informed that weapons and explosives were in the cargo. The pilot headed for an emergency port , where the storm was awaited, and then the ship called at the southern Finnish port of Kotka .

During the subsequent clean-up work to clear up the chaos in the hold and the subsequent loading, the dockers saw missiles and damaged boxes of explosives. Customs found 69 American-made Patriot surface-to-air missiles for which there were no proper papers on board.

However, after inquiries in Germany, the case cleared up. The main customs office in Oldenburg informed that the sender was the Federal Office for Defense Technology and Procurement . The critical cargo comes from the armed forces and was loaded on board the Thor Liberty with the necessary export permits to South Korea in Papenburg . The transit permits required for the stopover in Finland were not available, however, as the stopover with an additional load of anchor chains and paper machines for Shanghai (China) in Finland was not originally planned. The explosives were therefore stowed in containers in Finland and the missiles were confiscated.

When continue the "Thor Liberty" was presented Kiel before entering the Kiel Canal from the water police Kiel stopped to consider before introduction into the channel, the vessel and its cargo. Since the prescribed packing certificates for the 21 containers with the explosives were missing, the ship received an order from the See-Berufsgenossenschaft to call at the nearest port in order to properly secure the cargo.
