Thorsten Kähler

Thorsten Kähler (born February 1, 1955 ) is a Rear Admiral a. D. of the German Navy . His last role was from March 1, 2015 to September 21, 2018, Chief of Staff at the Marine Command in Rostock .

Military career

Thorsten Kähler joined the German Armed Forces as an officer candidate in 1973 . From 1974 to 1977 he studied economics and organizational science at the University of the Federal Armed Forces in Hamburg . He was trained as a submarine officer and was then deployed in Germany, France and the Netherlands. In 1987 he served as corvette captain on the staff of Commander Standing Naval Force Atlantic . From 1988 he completed the admiralty staff course at the command academy of the Bundeswehr in Hamburg and was awarded the General Heusinger Prize in 1990. From 1995 to 1997 he was in command of the frigate Bavaria . In 1998 he became a consultant at the Federal Ministry of Defense . In 2001 he took over the 6th frigate squadron in Wilhelmshaven. In 2003 he was promoted to sea captain and served with the International Military Staff (IMS) at NATO headquarters in Brussels. In 2005 he became head of the department and in 2006 deputy head of the planning staff of the Federal Ministry of Defense (PlStab). From 2009 to 2012 he was the commander of the Operational Flotilla 2 and temporarily deputy commander of Operation Atalanta . From June to November 2012 he was Task Group Commander of Operation Active Endeavor . From 2013 to 2015 he was Sub-Department Head I in the Politics department in the Federal Ministry of Defense. On March 1, 2015, he took over the post of Chief of Staff in the naval command in Rostock. He handed over this post to Flotilla Admiral Karsten Schneider on September 21 and retired at the end of the month after 45 years of service.
