Karsten Schneider (born January 11, 1956 in Munich ) is a Rear Admiral of the German Navy and has been Chief of Staff at the Naval Command in Rostock since September 21, 2018 .

Military career

Schneider joined the German Navy in July 1974 and completed his training as an officer at the Naval School Mürwik , on the sailing training ship Gorch Fock and the training ship Deutschland . From October 1975 he studied economics and organizational sciences at the Helmut Schmidt University in Hamburg and graduated in 1978 with a degree in business administration . He then became an officer on watch in the 5th Schnellbootgeschwader . From 1982 to 1984 he was an exchange officer in the United States Navy . From 1985 to 1987 he was captain lieutenant in command of the speedboat S-59 Reiher . This was followed by a job as adjutant to the commander of the fleet . From 1989 to 1991 he served on the frigate Bremen . This was followed by admiral staff training at the command academy of the Bundeswehr . In 1993, Schneider moved to the Federal Chancellery in Bonn as a consultant and personal assistant to the head of the Foreign and Security Policy department . From 1995 to 1997 he was in command of the frigate Lübeck , with which he participated twice in Operation Sharp Guard .

This was followed by a time as a consultant in the command staff of the armed forces in the Federal Ministry of Defense in Bonn, responsible for the NATO partnership for peace program . In 1999 he became a consultant for the “Common Security and Future of the Bundeswehr” commission ( Weizsäcker Commission ). From 2000 Schneider was head of the department for personnel, internal management and training in the planning staff of the Federal Minister of Defense in Berlin .

In the summer of 2002 he took over command of the 4th frigate squadron in Wilhelmshaven . In 2003, he headed the Franco-German naval association and took part in the exploration in the disaster area of Banda Aceh after the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake . In February 2005, he switched to the naval command as head of division , where he was responsible for conceptual foundations and international cooperation. In 2008, Schneider became head of division in the armed forces management team in the area of conception of the armed forces / transformation , a task that he continued in 2012 as head of division for conception and goal setting in the planning department of the Federal Ministry of Defense.

Service as an admiral

On October 1, 2012, he took on the role of director of courses, since 2016 director of training, and deputy commander of the command and control academy of the Bundeswehr in Hamburg. On this post he was also promoted to flotilla admiral . Schneider handed over this post to Colonel i. G. Holger Neumann . On October 1, 2018, Schneider took over from Rear Admiral Thorsten Kähler as Chief of Staff in the naval command in Rostock.

From April 2013 to June 2018, Schneider was also chairman of the German Maritime Institute (DMI).
