Thorsten Waenerberg

Thorsten Adolf Waenerberg (born May 25, 1846 in Porvoo , Grand Duchy of Finland , † February 26, 1917 in Helsinki ) was a Finnish landscape and marine painter from the Düsseldorf School , art teacher and curator .

Waenerberg was born the son of theologian Gabriel Mauritz Waenerberg (1818-1887) and his wife Agata Sofia Aschan. His sister was Elin Kallio (1859–1927), the "mother of Finnish women's gymnastics". In 1864 he stayed as a pupil of Ferdinand von Wright in Haminalahti near Kuopio . Until 1865 he was initially a student at the drawing school of the Finnish Art Association. Then he went to Karlsruhe , where he studied with Hans Fredrik Gude . In 1866 he moved to Düsseldorf , where he stayed until 1873. He was initially a student of Karl Müller at the Düsseldorf Art Academy . In 1868/1869 he also attended Oswald Achenbach's landscape class there . He stayed in Paris for a short time . In the years 1880/1881 he stayed in The Hague and Amsterdam . Waenerberg painted landscapes in the Netherlands, France, Finland and Norway. He was awarded a bronze medal at the General Finnish Industrial and Art Exhibition in 1876. From 1874 to 1887 he worked as a teacher and director of the Turku drawing school , and from 1887 to 1914 as curator of the collections of the Finnish Art Association.
