Thorsten Wollmann

Thorsten Hermann Wollmann (born February 10, 1966 in Laupheim ) is a German jazz musician ( trumpet , flugelhorn , piano ) and composer who also writes classical music and compositions for wind orchestras.

Act

Wollmann studied composition, jazz trumpet and piano at the Cologne University of Music and Dance ; In 1994 he passed the artistic maturity examination there (his exam concert was recorded and broadcast by WDR ). During his studies he was a member of the State Youth Jazz Orchestra Baden-Württemberg and the Federal Jazz Orchestra (and the Federal Jazz Septet).

With his Thorsten Wollmann quintet he could be heard with concert recordings on SDR , SWF and WDR. Tours have taken him to Africa, Southeast Asia, India, Mexico, Portugal and Spain. He is currently performing with the Chiang Mai Jazz Trio and Quintet in northern Thailand.

As a composer he wrote commissioned compositions for the Kölner Rundfunkorchester, the WDR Big Band and the hr-Bigband , the Bundesjazzorchester, the Südpool-Ensemble Baden-Württemberg, the Bundesmusikfest 1995, the Swiss Ensemble Pyramide , the Cologne "Duo Concertante" and the Bamberg Symphony Big band . Wollmann wrote film music (in 1996 he was the only European participant to be invited to the ASCAP film composer workshop in Hollywood), jazz compositions, tangos, children's songs, works for wind orchestra , chamber music and symphonic works. These include a “Concert for symphonic wind orchestra based on pictures by Paul Klee”, a piano concerto, “The Elements” for large orchestra or the “Symphony for the End of the 20th Century”.

Wollmann has lived with his family in Thailand since 1996, where he teaches at Payap University in Chiang Mai . From 2002 to 2005 he received his PhD in classical composition from the University of Auckland .

Prizes and awards

In 1992 Wollmann was awarded the Baden-Württemberg Jazz Prize . In 2002 he was honored with the Philip Neill Memorial Prize in Music from the University of Otago ; He received a Best Original Motion Picture Award for his music for the New Zealand short film Promenade .
