It was introduced into central Italian rivers that flow into the Tyrrhenian Sea . It is very widespread, often in the Po and other northern Italian rivers.
Way of life
The Tiber barbel reaches a relatively old age. It mostly lives in fast-flowing and oxygen-rich waters in the mountain regions, but also lives in lowland rivers. It is also found in some lakes. It feeds on benthic small animals, fry, juvenile fish and algae. The spawning season takes place in the months of April to July, with the animals preferring to spawn on gravel.
Hazard and protection
The Tiber barbel is regionally threatened by overfishing . In the middle reaches of the Po, their population has declined due to the proliferation of catfish ( Silurus glanis ) and river barbel ( Barbus barbus ).
The Tiber barbel is listed by the European Union in Appendix II of the Habitats Directive and is therefore considered a type of community interest, for whose preservation special protection areas must be designated by the member states.
Economical meaning
It has been introduced into numerous Italian waters as a sport fish.
