Tiberios (son of Justinian II)
Tiberios ( Middle Greek Τιβέριος , Latin Tiberius ; * 705 in Phanagoria , † December 711 in Blachernae ) was co-emperor of the Byzantine Empire from 706 until his death .
Life
Tiberios was the son of Emperor Justinian II and the Khazarian princess Theodora. He was born shortly before his father recaptured the throne in Constantinople after ten years of exile with the support of the Bulgarian Khan Terwel . Already at the age of one year Tiberios, who had an older half-sister Eudokia, was made basileus and co-emperor and appears as such on his father's coins.
When Justinian was overthrown in a revolt in December 711 under the leadership of Philippikos Bardanes , this meant the death sentence for the young Tiberios as well. With his assassination, the Heraklian dynasty , which had ruled the throne of Byzantium for a century, ended.
In the year 737 a pretender named Beser (Bâshîr) appeared in Asia Minor , who claimed to be the son of Justinian (or Theodosius III ).
