Tidemann Steen (* in Hildesheim ; † 1441 in Lübeck ) was a mayor of the Hanseatic city of Lübeck .

Life

In 1405 Steen became known as the elderly man of the Schonenfahrer . Around 1416 he was appointed to the council of the city of Lübeck and from then on represented it at all important Hanseatic days . He developed foreign policy talent in numerous missions for the city-state and, together with Konrad Brekewoldt, negotiated several times with King Erik VII of Denmark . After the outbreak of the Sund Customs War , he became mayor and at the same time commander-in-chief of the Hanseatic fleet in action against Denmark in 1427 . The fleet he commanded was defeated by the Danes in the naval battle of the Oresund (1427) . After returning to Lübeck, he was relieved of his offices because of the defeat and placed in chains in the stables . The detention was reduced at the instigation of advocates, converted into house arrest from 1430 on the action of King Sigismund and lifted at the end of 1434. In the wills of Lübeck citizens he was listed several times as a documentary witness and guardian until 1427 .

The defeat suffered in Öresund sparked considerable unrest in several sister cities. In Wismar , Johann Bantzkow and Hinrik van Haren, two mayors, were sentenced to death and executed in the same year. The Hamburg councilor Johann Kletze met the same fate at the beginning of 1428.
