The deep tunnel is a visitor mine and healing tunnel in the Braunenberg near Aalen-Wasseralfingen . The mine was previously used as Wilhelm I's iron ore mine .

From 1608 to 1939, iron ore was mined there with temporary interruptions . During this time the underground labyrinth continued to grow up to 6 km. Today the most interesting tunnels , shafts and passages are open as show mines and for breathing cures ( speleotherapy ).

Location / geology

The Braunenberg is located in the eastern part of the Swabian Alb on the beach edge of the former Jurassic Sea . By sedimentation of brown iron granules (Eisenoolithkörner) in the iron sandstone formation created in the space around Aalen two mineable seams . The two seams in the Braunjura Beta are 1.4 m thick in the upper seam and 1.7 m in the lower seam. The iron content is around 21% to 42% in the upper and 26% to 31% in the lower.

history

Emperor Karl IV enfeoffed Count Ulrich the Elder on April 14, 1365 . J. von Helfenstein with all iron works in his rule. In the following years, the pits on Postal arisen left of the stove and the Red stab at Grauleshof. In 1608 Hans Siegmund von Woellwarth discovered the upper seam on the Braunenberg.

Initially, the Hinkelstollen, the Plockstollen and the Stöcklesstollen were excavated . The Clemensstollen followed in 1797. The deep auxiliary and water tunnel was excavated in 1811 to divert mine water . In the years 1840/1841 the day route No. 1 leading to the upper seam was built , at the same time the deep tunnel was driven vertically below this into the lower seam . From 1843 the three mining routes (A, B and C) led about 100 meters into the mining areas north of day route No. 1. In the area developed by these three mining routes, most of the mining took place on Braunenberg. The ore extracted was always transported away via the deep tunnel through the lower areas of the mine.

Due to the low iron content and the high proportion of silica, mining in the area of the deep tunnel was stopped in 1924 and relocated to the Süßen Löchle. It was dismantled there until 1939. In 1941 the entrance to the Süßen Löchle was walled up for security reasons . With the closure of the Faber-du-Faur tunnel in 1948, which was excavated at the Burgstall in Aalen in 1938, the more than 500-year-old mining tradition in the Aalen area ended.

Visitor mine

Development of the visitor mine

In 1979 the mining path on Braunenberg was set up and the mouth of the deep tunnel, which had been walled up until then, was provided with a gate. Stimulated by the increased interest of the public, the former iron ore mine was opened up as a show mine from 1986 onwards .

Since September 1987 there have been daily tours of the mine during the season. The mine train takes visitors 400 meters into the mine. In a slide show and on the tour that follows, visitors experience the centuries-old world of work.

The Tiefer Stollen Visitor Mine Association, also known as the Mining Association, founded in 1986, supports the operation of the visitor mine financially. Its members take on repair work and guide visitors. Customs are maintained on miners' days. Since the 2000 season, an increasing number of employees from the city of Aalen have been working to take care of the operation of the visitors and the maintenance of the facility. In October 2010, the Zeiss company announced that it would support a new multi-vision show in the deep tunnel to promote the region. It is intended to replace the ten-year-old slide and clay show, which is no longer didactically up-to-date. In addition, there is a Christmas market above and below ground on four days during Advent .

The number of visitors to the deep gallery sank from initially over 70,000 visitors in 1988 to 41,500 visitors in 2011. By the beginning of the 25th season as a visitor mine in 2012, the deep gallery had a total of 1.4 million visitors.

Since April 2016, the visitor mine has also been one of 26 information points of the UNESCO Geopark Swabian Alb .
