history

Colony of Chilean flamingos in the Bernburg Zoo

The beginnings of the Bernburg Zoo go back to 1909. At that time, a first aviary for pheasants was built on the courtyard wall of the forest keeper's house in Krumbholz, which the city of Köthen had donated. At that time there was already fifty-year old brown bear keeping at Bernburg Castle. In addition, mute swans and other water birds have already been cared for in the immediate vicinity of the future zoo on the Röse.

From the mid-1930s, peacocks, exotic small birds, seals, monkeys, flamingos, crowned cranes and finally even magellanic penguins were added. After only a few animals had survived the cuts of World War II , there was a hopeful new beginning from October 1945. For the first time, enclosures for ungulates were created in a style similar to that of a wilderness park, made of felled spruce wood from a bark beetle area. A bird house followed shortly afterwards. Finally, on October 13, 1951, the reopening of the expanded animal enclosure was celebrated under the name of Bernburg Zoo. The animal population gradually increased. Even a hyena and toucans came to Bernburg. Until the Ministry of Culture in distant Berlin decreed a profile as a home zoo and the associated extensive restriction to native or formerly native animals. In 1972 the previously municipal zoo became the sponsorship of the state-owned enterprise (VEB) Nahercovery, later VEB Nahercovery Bernburg. The political change brought the transfer back to the city of Bernburg.

At the beginning of June 2013, the zoo was affected by the flooding in 2013 , which caused floods and evacuations in numerous Central European cities and regions from the end of May to the beginning of June. The company and the surrounding streets were temporarily closed.

The zoo in Bernburg has been in continuous redesign for several years. The aim is to present the diversity of the animal world in spacious, natural-looking facilities. Special attention is paid to the conservation breeding of threatened species and those rarely shown in zoos. The tour leads through the areas of Africa, Eurasia, Australia and America and is increasingly based on the principle of the geozoo . Its stations are:
