The zoo of the city of Bochum operates under the name Tierpark und Fossilium Bochum . The 1.9 hectare zoo is located in the city park and shows around 3900 animals of 330 species .

In the immediate vicinity there are other excursion destinations such as the German Mining Museum and the Zeiss Planetarium .

history

The beginnings of the Bochumer Tierpark go back to the establishment of the Bochumer Tierparkfreunde e. V. returned on March 3, 1933. In the same year, the first animal enclosures for deer, sheep and birds of prey were built in the city park at the Bismarck Tower . Monkey, bird and exotic houses followed. In 1939 the bear gorge and an aquarium house were added. Of the 300 animal species on display, 100 were already fish.

Schools used the zoo to supplement biology and drawing lessons. The animal park ringed birds on behalf of the Heligoland bird protection station . During the Second World War , the zoo was completely destroyed by bombs, so that the last remaining animals had to be given to the Wuppertal Zoo and the Essen ornithological station on June 24, 1943 .

The new beginning began with the predator tamer Lotte Walther, who moved into winter quarters on the zoo and donated half of the income from an animal show for the reconstruction of the zoo. The Bochumer Tierparkfreunde association was reconstituted. Domestic animals should form the focal point of the new zoo, which has doubled in area. Particular successes in animal horticulture were achieved with the rearing of Limikolen , guillemots and gannets .

Zoo today

From 1973 to 2012 Eduard Stirnberg headed the development of the Bochum zoo. Under his direction, the zoo became a relatively small zoo, managed according to scientific principles, in which a cross-section of the entire animal world is now shown. In 1983 the new company and farm building was built. In 1988, the construction of an aquarium and terrarium house with a 170,000 liter coral reef tank for blacktip reef sharks followed as a highlight. After purchasing the fossil collection Helmut Leich with over 400 fossils from the Solnhofen Jura, the fossilium was completed in 1996.

The North Sea Worlds opened on June 3, 2006 . In addition to two North Sea themed aquariums, this complex includes a 565,000 liter tank for seals and Humboldt penguins , in which both species can be observed in clear seawater through large underwater panes . Attached is a walk-in aviary for ruffs , redshanks , avocets as well as spoonbills and lapwing , with which the Bochum zoo builds on earlier successes.

In spring 2012, the park was rebuilt and new enclosures were built for coatis , ring- tailed lemurs , common marmosets , flamingos , meerkats and squirrel monkeys . The visitors are now welcomed in a new glass entrance hall that adjoins the aquarium house. The bee worlds serve many school classes as a teaching place and the further training of beekeepers from the Ruhr area. The interactive exhibition and a real bee colony bring visitors closer to the special features of this important insect.

There are also birds of prey , Seychelles giant tortoises and a petting zoo with sheep , goats and alpacas .

The previous deputy zoo director Ralf Slabik has been running the zoo since August 1st, 2012. Since 2013, the Bochum Zoo with its fossilium has been a member of the Vereinigung Westfälischer Museen e. V. (VMV).

In 2016, the zoo opened a show feed kitchen as the first zoo in North Rhine-Westphalia and the second zoo in Germany. Through a large panoramic window, visitors can watch the animal keepers preparing the feed and ask questions about the animals' eating habits via an intercom. Interactive signage with numerous hands-on stations also includes visitors.

Environmental education and zoo school

The current zoo school of the Bochum zoo was built in 1988 on the grounds of the zoo and named after its sponsor Else Baltz. The zoo school offers lessons for kindergarten children and school classes of all types of schools all year round. In addition, there are special offers for children's birthdays, adults and seniors, as well as for people with dementia or with handicaps.

Another focus is on the organization of workshops, events (lectures, family celebrations, action days, evening tours, etc.). The zoo school of the Bochumer Tierpark sees itself as an institution for education for nature, environmental, animal and species protection as well as for sustainable development.
