The Tigil ( Russian Тигиль , in the upper reaches Большой Тигиль, Bolshoi Tigil, "great Tigil") is a 300 km long tributary of the Sea of Okhotsk in the west of the Kamchatka Peninsula in the Far East of Russia . The Cossack Vladimir Vasilyevich Atlasov was the first European to reach the river in 1696.

River course

The Tigil rises on the southwest edge of the Sredinny Range situated 2,526  m high volcano Tschaschakondscha . The river is fed by a glacier . It initially flows 25 km to the southwest and turns to the northwest for the next 60 km. Then the Tigil flows about 100 km to the north. It takes in several larger tributaries from the right, which arise in the Sredinny ridge. These include the rivers Perewalowaja , Sedanka and Piroschnikowa . For the last 90 km the Tigil turns to the northwest. The village of Tigil is 50 km above the mouth on the right bank of the river. At river kilometer 14 the Napana meets the Tigil coming from the south. This finally flows into the southeastern part of the Shelikhov Bay , which forms the northernmost part of the Sea of Okhotsk .

Hydrology

The Tigil's catchment area covers 17,800 km². The mean discharge 50 km above the mouth is 200 m³ / s.

Fish fauna

Various salmon fish are found in the Tigil .
