Tillandsia minutiflora is a species of the genus Tillandsia inthe bromeliad family (Bromeliaceae). It is the smallest species of the genus Tillandsia and thus also of the bromeliad family. It thrives in dry valleys on the eastern slopes of the Andes from Bolivia to central Argentina , mostly at altitudes between 800 and 1200 meters, in Bolivia up to 2600 meters.

Appearance and leaf

Tillandsia minutiflora is an epiphytic species, so it lives on other plants (mainly trees or cacti). It is a gray tillandsia that thrives in low-precipitation, high-humidity areas and prefers full sun. It is the smallest species of the genus Tillandsia and thus also of the entire bromeliad family (Bromeliaceae). It rarely grows larger than 5 cm. It has very few roots. The leaves are spiraling on short stems; several such stems stand together and therefore such a group of plants looks like a moss. The leaves are coarse, with entire margins, relatively densely covered with suction scales and are 4 to 9 mm long.

Inflorescence, flower, fruit and seeds

In contrast to many other bromeliads, the spiked inflorescence is relatively inconspicuous and small, it contains only one flower and usually no bract . The hermaphrodite , threefold flower is small for Tillandsia species. The three free sepals are symmetrical , have scales and are 5 to 9 mm long. The three free petals are yellow. The six stamens are shorter than the narrow petals. The stylus is short and thick. They form sedentary capsule fruits in which the hairs of the seeds are not folded.

Tillandsia minutiflora can easily be confused with Tillandsia tricholepis and Tillandsia pedicellata , which are only slightly larger.

Systematics

Tillandsia minutiflora belongs to the subgenus Diaphoranthema in the genus Tillandsia .

Tillandsia bryoides was validly first described in 1878 by John Gilbert Baker based on herbarium material by Paul Günther Lorentz in A synopsis of the species of Diaphoranthema in the Journal of Botany , Volume 16, pp. 236-241. Baker used the name noted by August Heinrich Rudolf Grisebach on the herbarium sheet with the collective number Lorentz 128. A year later, von Grisebach and another herbarium from Lorentz changed the description in Symbolae ad Floram argentinam in the treatises of the Royal Society of Sciences in Göttingen , Volume 24, p. 334; In terms of nomenclature , he created an invalid homonym . Lyman B. Smith saw Lorentz herbarium specimens and found that 128 herbarium material from the two species Tillandsia tricholepis and Tillandsia bryoides were present on the sheet . When Walter Till looked through all known herbarium specimens from Lorentz and in 2011 by Sabina Donadío in various herbariums, it turned out that they all belong to the species Tillandsia tricholepis Baker, only half of herbarium sheet 128 was left. So are Tillandsia bryoides Griseb. ex Baker 1878 and Tillandsia bryoides Griseb. 1879 synonyms of Tillandsia tricholepis Baker. The specific epithet bryoides means moss-like.

With the new lectotype LBSmith released Tillandsia bryoides LBSm. in the monograph of Tillandsioideae in Flora Neotropica , 1977, p. 879. Till referred to this species as Tillandsia bryoides auct. The herbarium sheets belonging to this species show the characteristics according to the two descriptions by Baker and Grisebach. Sabina Donadío published in 2011 in A valid name for the taxon known as Tillandsia bryoides auct. (Bromeliaceae) in Darwiniana , Volume 49, Issue 2 for it a new name Tillandsia minutiflora Donadío. The specific epithet minutiflora means "with very small flowers".
