Tilo Pfeifer

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Tilo Pfeifer (* 1939 in Benzen near Walsrode in the Lüneburg Heath ) is a German engineer and professor of production metrology and quality management . He is one of the pioneers in quality science.

Life

Tilo Pfeifer studied communications engineering in the electrical engineering course at RWTH Aachen University . As early as his second year of study, he built a bridge to mechanical engineering as an assistant at the WZL machine tool laboratory at RWTH Aachen University . Since 1965 he was a scientific employee at Herwart Opitz at the WZL. He graduated in 1968 his work at the Institute with the promotion of Dr.-Ing. from.

Tilo Pfeifer then held a leading position in industry from 1969. After his return to the WZL and his habilitation in 1972, he was appointed professor and head of the field of measurement technology for automated production at the WZL.

Since 1980, Pfeifer was also a member of the board of directors at the Fraunhofer Institute for Production Technology (IPT) in Aachen, where he headed the measurement and quality technology department.

In 1988, the increasing importance of production metrology and quality assurance was met and the original subject area changed to the first German chair for production metrology and quality management ; Tilo Pfeifer was appointed to this chair. The RWTH Aachen thus continued its pioneering role in the field of measurement and automation technology; because one of the first German institutes for control engineering was founded here by Otto Schäfer in 1957 , almost at the same time as the corresponding establishment by Winfried Oppelt in Darmstadt and by Heinrich Kindler in 1955 in Dresden. At RWTH, other application-oriented chairs have been filled in other faculties: Control engineering (head: Heinrich Rake ) and process control technology (head: Martin Polke ).

Since the beginning of his activity as a university lecturer, Tilo Pfeifer has continuously maintained national and international cooperation with various facilities for measurement technology, automation and quality management. Numerous memberships in leading associations, scientific and technical organizations and research communities underline his wide-ranging commitment. Pfeifer repeatedly took on management responsibility in exposed positions and thus gave production metrology and quality management new impulses.

Tilo Pfeifer documented his research results in over 1,000 scientific publications in specialist journals and books as well as in over 500 lectures at national and international congresses. After taking over the first German chair for production metrology and quality management, Pfeifer also became a co-editor of Industrieanzeiger . Here he was effective with specialist articles, interviews and statements as well as in expert discussions with experts from the industry (well-known editor-in-chief: Rolf Langbein ).

Pfeifer retired in 2004 when he reached retirement age . With a specialist colloquium, around 400 colleagues, companions and employees honored and said goodbye to the internationally recognized specialist in production metrology and quality management. Numerous high-profile scientists have emerged from Pfeifer's academic environment. His successor was his student Robert Schmitt (* 1961), who holds the chair for production metrology and quality management as well as director of the WZL machine tool laboratory at RWTH Aachen University. In addition, Schmitt took over Pfeifer's functions in the Fraunhofer Institute IPT since January 2005.
