Tim Draxl (born October 8, 1981 in Sydney ) is an Australian cabaret artist, singer and actor.

Outside of the (musical) theater scene and outside of Australia, he is best known for his role as doctor Henry Fox in A Place to Call Home and as Prof. Mike French in the BBC series Supernova .

life and career

Draxl was born in Sydney in 1981 and grew up in Jindabyne , New South Wales , where his family worked in the skiing industry and his three older brothers became professional athletes. Even as a young man, his father competed as a skier for Austria at the Winter Olympics. During his childhood, he alternately spent six months a year there and the other half of the year in the Austrian Alps . He speaks and sings in German fluently and almost without an accent. One of his brothers now lives in Italy. In view of the reports of the deadly spread of COVID-19 in Italy, Draxl and his partner Adrian Barrett moved to the south coast of Australia to look after his mother who lived there in the event of a lockdown.

He began his career as a cabaret artist and continues this form of solo entertainment to this day. In 2016, Draxl was named by the Morning Herald as "still and without a doubt Australia's best cabaret artist". His performance Tim Draxl in Concert was nominated in 2002 for a Helpmann Award for best live music event.

Draxl's film roles include Swimming Upstream (2003), In My Sleep (2010) and The Groomsmen (2011). In 2004, he received a Logie Award nomination for Outstanding Actor for his performance on the ABC miniseries The Shark Net . In 2005 he joined the BBC series Supernova as Professor Mike French . He impersonated the role in both seasons through 2006. In 2006 he had a guest appearance on the series Headland as Kieran Bale. In 2010 he played Conrad Doyle in four episodes of the drama series Tangle . He had other television roles in Supernova , Serangoon Road , Mrs Biggs , Molly and most recently in the internationally successful drama series A Place to Call Home (main cast from the beginning of the third season to the end of the series after the sixth). He played the forward-thinking surgeon Henry Fox, who in 1950s Australia began a relationship with James Bligh (David Berry), a member of the noble matriarchal family around whom the series action revolves. The illustrated love story between Fox and Bligh developed a life of its own early on outside of the series through fan contributions on platforms such as YouTube.

With Sony Australia he released two studio albums: Ordinary Miracles (1999) and Insongniac (2001). Live at the Supper Club followed in 2010 . His latest album is titled My Funny Valentine (2012).

Together with Bryce Hallett, Draxl developed the play Freeway - The Chet Baker Journey .

In spring 2020, the five-month rehearsals for a new production of A Chorus Line had just been completed when the entire artistic operations of many countries had to be suspended until further notice due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which was raging worldwide at the time . The play was supposed to open the season of the Darlinghurst Theater Company at the Eternity Playhouse Sydney on March 19, 2020 - on the morning of the premiere day the Australian government issued a ban on gatherings for groups of more than 100 people and the start of the season was postponed indefinitely by the theater board.

In July 2020 Draxl had a cabaret appearance in the opera hall of the Sydney Opera House, which had to take place without an audience due to COVID. The performance was recorded for the Opera House's Digital Season Streaming series and made available online. At this event, as on the previous tour in 2019, he was musically accompanied by a befriended trio - consisting of Daniel Edmunds (pianist, music director), Nick Sinclaire (double bass) and Andy Davies (drums).
