Tim Maia 1987

Tim Maia (actually: Sebastião Rodrigues Maia ; born September 28, 1942 in Rio de Janeiro ; † March 15, 1998 in Niterói ) was a Brazilian soul and funk musician . The singer, songwriter, producer, conductor and multi-instrumentalist is considered one of the pioneers in the introduction of elements of soul music into Brazilian pop music and one of the greatest icons of Brazilian music of the 20th century.

In 2001, for example, when Guns N 'Roses performed in Rio de Janeiro, guitarist Robin Finck surprisingly played a piece by Maia.

life and career

Tim Maia grew up in the Tijuca district in northern Rio de Janeiro and wrote his first songs at the age of eight; at fourteen he formed his first short-lived band called Os Tijucanos do Ritmo , in which he played drums for a year. In the following years he took guitar lessons and met Jorge Ben . Maia eventually taught himself, and his students included Erasmo Esteves, who later became known as Erasmo Carlos and musical partner of Roberto Carlos . First, however, in 1957, Maia and Esteves and other friends from their neighborhood formed the band The Snacks , which was renamed The Sputniks shortly after Roberto Carlos joined the band. Carlos, who had already appeared regularly as a singer on television, arranged the contact with producer Carlos Imperial; several television appearances followed. Due to personal differences between Maia and Carlos, the band was soon disbanded. Maia, who had meanwhile received a scholarship to study in the USA, then left Brazil in 1959, to which he did not return until four years later.

Maia's first solo LP was released in 1970 - like the following three albums - under the name Tim Maia by Polydor. The album could be kept for 24 months in the Brazilian charts and already contained songs that further for Maia's musical work should be trend-setting, the by Cassiano , another pioneer of Brazilian soul music, written Primavera , Corone Antonio Bento (composed by Luís Wanderley / João do Vale) and the self-written by Maia Azul da Cor do Mar .
