Timotei Cipariu (born February 21, 1805 in Pănade , today Sâncel parish , Transylvania , † September 3, 1887 in Blaj ) was a Romanian Greek-Uniate priest, philologist and politician.

biography

Timotei Cipariu attended the grammar school in Blaj from 1816 to 1820 and then the uniate seminary there (1820-22 philosophical, 1822-25 theological studies). In 1827 he was ordained a priest. From 1828 he taught philosophy at the grammar school in Blaj, from 1830 he was a professor of dogmatics at the seminary in Blaj.

In 1836 he traveled to Bucharest with George Barițiu . He became one of the most important leaders of the Romanians from Transylvania in their national emancipation struggle from 1848 to 1851.

From the 1850s he was one of the most important researchers in the field of the Romanian language . He was one of the leaders in the effort to replace words of Slavic origin in the Romanian language with those of Latin origin, but avoided the extreme of many contemporaries of completely "purifying" the language.

On November 4, 1861 Cipariu was co-founder, later also President (1877-1887) of ASTRA and in 1866 one of the founding members of the Romanian Academy .
