Tinatin Tina Chidascheli ( Georgian თინათინ (თინა) ხიდაშელი ; born June 8, 1973 in Tbilisi , Georgian SSR ) is a Georgian lawyer and politician . Since May 2015, she has been the country's first female defense minister in the governments of Irakli Gharibashvili and Giorgi Kvirikashvili . Khidascheli resigned in August 2016 after her party decided to leave the ruling Georgian party alliance Georgian Dream .

Life

Tinatin Chidascheli was born on June 8, 1973 in Tbilisi. She studied international law at Tbilisi State University . She studied abroad at the Central European University in Budapest and the Washington College of Law. She has a Masters in International Relations and Political Science. Chidascheli worked in various international and non-governmental organizations , but never in the government of Mikheil Saakashvili .

Chidascheli is married to the political scientist Dawit Ussupashvili , the former chairman of the Georgian parliament (2012-2016). Both were chairmen of the influential Association of Young Lawyers of Georgia , which he founded. The couple have two children.

politics

In 2012, Chidascheli was one of the leaders of the opposition Republican Party , which is represented on Tbilisi City Council. In parliament, she represented the single-mandate constituency of Sagaredscho in the Kakheti region as a member of parliament and she became chair of the parliamentary committee for European integration .

In 2012 her party participated in the Georgian Dream Alliance , which took over government that same year.

During a government reshuffle, Georgia's Prime Minister Gharibashvili appointed Tinatin Chidascheli as defense minister on May 1, 2015. As such, it sought rapid membership in NATO . She also remained in the cabinet of successor Giorgi Kvirikashvili in January 2016 , but resigned on August 1, 2016 after her party decided to leave the ruling coalition.
