The Tma ( Russian Тьма ) is a 142 km long left tributary of the Volga in the European part of Russia .

description

The Tma rises not far from the village Deneschnoe on the south-eastern slope of the moraine range Vyshnevolotskaya Grada ( Russian Вышневолоцкая гряда ) in the southern Tver Oblast . It flows first in a northerly direction and after a few kilometers eastwards through a narrow valley. The landscape here is dominated by grassland.

The river maintains its easterly direction for most of its course, but it forms numerous curves . After the confluence of the Ratschaina , the river widens, the bank area is now mainly overgrown with pine forest. The Tma finally reaches the Volga around 15 kilometers west of the city center of Tver .

Hydrology

The Tma is frozen on average from early December to early April. Its mean width is 20-25 meters, while it is between 0.5 and 0.7 m deep.

Tourism and culture

Due to its scenic location and easy accessibility, the Tma is a popular destination, including for boat trips . The villages of Malinniki and Bernowo on the upper reaches of the Tma were visited several times by the Russian national poet Alexander Sergejewitsch Pushkin . In Bernowo a museum was set up in his honor in the former country estate of the Wulfow family.

Even Isaac Ilich Levitan , one of the most important representatives of realism in Russia, worked at the upper Tma. His painting У омута ( At the Shoal ) was made near Bernowo.
