Tobias Steinmann (* 1556 in Leipzig ; † December 12, 1631 in Jena ) was an early modern publisher , printer and councilor in Jena.

Life

The son of the Leipzig book printer Johannes Steinmann and his wife Cordula began studying at the University of Leipzig in 1574 and later became a book printer in Jena, where he also appeared as a councilor. He had spent his years of traveling as a journeyman in Breslau, Olmütz, Prague, Cologne, Nuremberg, Ingolstadt and other places. As a printer, he largely determined the printing industry of his time in this place and, with his father-in-law Thomas Rhebart, printed the Jena Luther edition, an edition of all of Martin Luther's works.

Numerous funeral sermons were published in his publishing house in the 16th and 17th centuries. One of them is worth highlighting because the corresponding grave slab has been preserved and was found again. That was Hans Melchior Marschalch's . However, it is significantly more important that works by Martin Luther such as B. his table speeches appeared in his publishing house in 1603. He also published disputation papers and legal texts. There are also other academic writings such as speeches by rectors. In 1589 the Ernestine Police and State Regulations appeared for the first time .

The Thuringian University and State Library Jena has around 650 publications that have been published by this publisher. The publisher did not die with his death. The most recent writings in the university library are from around 1675.
