Tod einer Schülers is a six-part television series produced by ZDF in 1980 that deals with the suicide of the fictional high school graduate Claus Wagner ( Till Topf ). She was awarded the Golden Camera in 1981. The direction was directed by Claus Peter Witt and the script was written by Robert Stromberger . Each episode begins with the film sequence of the suicide of the student and then deals with the suicide incident from different perspectives (criminal police, parents, teacher, classmate, girlfriend, Wagner himself). After the end of each episode, the theologian Klaus-Peter Jörns spoke an epilogue for about five minutes, which reflected and classified the plot.

Aftermath

Some parent associations accused the series of seducing suicidal people to imitate. According to a study evaluated by the Central Institute for Mental Health in Mannheim over a period of 70 days after the first broadcast, the suicide frequency in the railway area among 15- to 19-year-old male adolescents rose by 175% (see Werther effect ), after the second broadcast one and a half years later 115%, which is due to the lower number of viewers. Subsequently, the ZDF commissioned two further studies, which came to the conclusion that a connection between the television series and the frequent suicides of male adolescents could not be proven.

After the series had been banned from video publication for almost 30 years for fear of school suicides, it was finally released on August 7, 2009 and released on DVD by ZDF.
