Life

youth

Toktogul Satylganov came from a very poor family in the Jalalabat region . He did not learn to read or write, but was sent by his parents to a Bai, a kind of feudal lord , at the age of 12 , where his life was like that of a slave. At 13 he turned to music for the first time and composed his first songs. He also learned to play the komuz , a lute common in Central Asia . His first song, entitled Because of Poverty, addresses his poor living conditions during his youth. In the following years he became more and more famous with his songs and poems.

exile

After the Andijan uprising in 1898, in which insurgents attacked the Russian occupiers, Toktogul Satylganov was accused of rebellion and sentenced to death in August 1898. However, he was pardoned and his sentence was reduced to seven years in Siberia . There he met socialist revolutionaries and was influenced by their political views. In 1902 Toktogul managed to escape from Siberia with the help of Russian supporters, and in 1903 he returned to Kyrgyzstan.

Relationship to Soviet rule

Toktogul explicitly welcomed the October Revolution , but did not take an active part in it. During this time he wrote one of his most famous poems, entitled What kind of woman gave birth to a person like Lenin? , which is considered one of the most important works of Kyrgyz literature during the Soviet rule. Toktogul enjoyed great fame and popularity in Soviet Kyrgyzstan. He wrote songs and poems about the communist party and was praised by them as a people's poet.
